Discover 4X4 Overlanding Across the French and Italian Alps with me

My journey into 4X4 overlanding started many years ago through rallying. After competing in cars including Escorts, a Manta and even a Hillman Imp, I wanted to experience more of the gravel

roads and remote tracks that had always fascinated me.

That passion eventually led me into 4X4 overlanding.

For more than 15 years, I have travelled extensively through France, Italy, Germany and the Alpine regions. Along the way, I have discovered some incredible mountain roads, gravel tracks, valleys and remote areas that are perfect for genuine overlanding adventures in Europe.

In 2027, I will be joined by my long-term rallying co-driver and race car mechanic, David. Between us, we bring many years of experience in rallying, mechanics, driving and exploring challenging routes.

Our aim at 4X4 Gravel Tours is simple. We want to share some of the incredible places we have discovered with people who enjoy travelling beyond the usual tourist routes. Come join us in 2027 on our Overlanding Tours 2027 We have the knowledge.

What Makes Our 4X4 Overlanding Adventures Different?

For us, 4X4 overlanding isn’t simply about driving from one destination to another.

It is about the journey.

It is about finding the gravel road that disappears into the mountains. It is about crossing high Alpine passes, exploring remote valleys and stopping to take in a view that you simply cannot

experience from a motorway.

Our overlanding adventures in Europe combine some of the best elements of adventure travel.

You can expect mountain roads, gravel tracks, spectacular scenery, fascinating history and plenty of opportunities to explore.

Our routes take us through some of the most impressive areas of the French and Italian Alps, including legendary mountain passes and beautiful protected landscapes.

Overlanding Col de la Bonette – The Roof of the Alps – 4×4 Overlanding

At around 2,715 metres above sea level, the Col de la Bonette takes you high into the French Alps. The road climbs through a spectacular mountain landscape, with sweeping bends, dramatic

peaks and incredible views across the surrounding countryside.

Overlanding Col de la Bonette is about much more than reaching the summit.

The climb itself is part of the adventure.

As the road rises higher into the mountains, the landscape changes dramatically. Valleys disappear below you while the surrounding peaks become increasingly impressive.

At the top, there is something very special about standing beside your 4×4 and looking across the mountains. It is one of those places that reminds you exactly why you started 4X4 overlanding in the first place. Come join me on your Overlanding Tours 2027

Overlanding Colle delle Finestre – Gravel, Mountains and History

The Colle delle Finestre is another route that perfectly captures what we love about 4X4 overlanding.

This famous mountain pass combines paved sections with gravel roads, creating a fantastic driving experience through the Italian Alps.

The route climbs through spectacular scenery, with numerous hairpin bends and long mountain climbs.

Then the tarmac gives way to gravel.

This is where the character of the journey really changes.

Overlanding Colle delle Finestre gives you the opportunity to experience a genuine Alpine gravel route while surrounded by some incredible mountain scenery.

For us, this combination of tarmac and gravel is what makes the route so enjoyable.

It isn’t simply about getting to the top. It is about enjoying every kilometre along the way.

Overlanding Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime – Into the Italian Wilderness

For those who love getting away from busy roads and developed areas, the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime is a truly special part of the Italian Alps.

This spectacular natural area is characterised by rugged mountains, deep valleys, forests and dramatic Alpine scenery.

Overlanding Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime gives us the opportunity to experience a very different side of Italy.

Here, the landscape becomes the main attraction. And with all 4X4 Overlanding the pace slows down.

There are mountains to explore, views to enjoy and quiet places where you can simply stop and appreciate where you are.

Overlanding Mercantour National Park – The French Alps at Their Best

Crossing back into France brings us to the spectacular Mercantour National Park.

This is one of the areas that stands out during our overlanding adventures in Europe, thanks to its combination of dramatic mountain scenery, Alpine valleys, high-altitude landscapes and fascinating wildlife.

The scenery can change quickly as you travel through the mountains.

One moment you can be travelling through a wooded valley. The next, you can be surrounded by huge Alpine peaks and open mountain landscapes.

4X4 Overlanding Mercantour National Park is about experiencing this incredible environment from behind the wheel while also making time to stop, explore and enjoy the scenery.

Wildlife is another part of what makes the region so memorable.

Keep your eyes open and you may spot ibex high on the mountainsides or hear marmots calling from the surrounding slopes.

Overlanding Col du Parpaillon – A Journey Through History

The Col du Parpaillon offers something completely different.

This spectacular mountain route takes you into the French Alps and towards one of the most fascinating features of the journey – the historic tunnel through the mountain.

The old military tunnel provides an incredible experience as you drive through the mountain.

Inside, the atmosphere changes completely. Thats what make 4X4 Overlanding the best.

It is dark, damp and echoing, creating a feeling that you have travelled back through time.

Outside, the landscape is completely different. High mountain scenery surrounds the route, making the journey to the tunnel every bit as memorable as the tunnel itself.

Overlanding Col du Parpaillon is a perfect example of why we love exploring the Alps by 4×4.

You get the driving adventure, the scenery and the history all in one journey.
