Overlanding Adventures in Europe with 4×4 Gravel Tours
4×4 Gravel Tours is a European overlanding adventure company specialising in 4×4 tours across France, Italy, the Alps and some of Europe’s most spectacular gravel roads. We take you beyond the usual tourist routes and onto the remote tracks, mountain roads and historic rally stages that make European overlanding so exciting.
With more than 15 years of overlanding experience, 4×4GT is built on first-hand knowledge of the places we visit. From the spectacular mountain passes of the Alps to remote gravel tracks through France and Italy, we have spent years exploring, driving and discovering the routes that make an unforgettable 4×4 adventure.
This isn’t about simply following a sat-nav from one hotel to another. It’s about the journey, the road beneath your tyres and the places you discover along the way. Our European overlanding tours are designed for people who want to experience something different, combining challenging gravel roads, breathtaking scenery, fascinating history and the freedom of travelling through Europe
in a 4×4.
From Rallying to European Overlanding
Hey, I’m Darren, and my passion for gravel roads and adventure started long before 4×4GT.
It began with rallying. After competing in Escorts, a Manta and even a Hillman Imp, I developed a real love for driving on gravel and exploring what lies beyond the normal road network. That passion eventually led me into overlanding, where I discovered a completely different way of experiencing Europe.
For more than 15 years, my wife Michelle and I have travelled extensively through France, Italy, Germany and the Alpine regions, exploring the roads, tracks and landscapes that have become the inspiration behind our tours.
Over the years, we’ve learned that the best adventures are often found away from the obvious routes. A small gravel track climbing into the mountains, an old rally stage hidden in the countryside or a remote Alpine road can create memories that stay with you for years.
That is the experience we want to share through 4×4 Gravel Tours.
Experience You Can Take With You
From 2027, I will also be joined by my long-term rally co-driver and race car mechanic, David.
Between us, we bring decades of experience in rallying, vehicles, driving and European travel. More importantly, we understand what makes a great 4×4 adventure.
Our aim is simple: to create memorable European overlanding tours for people who love 4×4 driving, gravel roads, spectacular scenery and the freedom to explore.

Col de la Bonette – The Roof of the Alps Overlanding
The Col de la Bonette is, for me, one of the most unforgettable overlanding adventures. Rising to 2,715 meters, it stands among the highest paved roads in Europe and is often celebrated as the “roof of the Alps.”
Each journey along its serpentine switchbacks and breathtaking panoramas rekindles my passion for overlanding. Reaching the summit, where the mountains unfurl endlessly in every direction, brings an exhilarating sense of standing at the very top of the world.
Colle delle Finestre – Where Gravel Meets Tarmac Overlanding
Secondly Another favourite of mine is the Colle delle Finestre, a road that combines smooth tarmac with rugged gravel sections. Its hairpin bends and long climbs make it exciting for drivers, while cyclists know it as one of the great Alpine challenges.
For me, it’s the perfect blend of adventure. Finally Starting on paved roads and then tackling proper gravel tracks that really let you feel the wild side of overlanding.
Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime – Italy’s Untamed Wilderness
Also When I need to escape into true wilderness, I head for the Parco Naturale delle Alpi Marittime in Italy. This region is remote, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful. Driving here is about more than just roads; it’s about immersing yourself in towering peaks, deep valleys, and wild terrain.
It’s the kind of place where you set up camp, light a fire, and feel completely connected to the land around you. 4×4 Gravel Tours Overlanding Italy France
Mercantour National Park – Alpine Beauty in France
Just across the border, the Mercantour National Park is one of my absolute highlights. The mountain scenery here is stunning crystal-clear lakes, high-altitude meadows, and dramatic peaks that rise sharply against the sky.
What I love most is the wildlife. Spotting ibex on the cliffs or hearing marmots calling in the distance makes every drive or hike through Mercantour feel magical.
For anyone who loves overlanding and nature, this park is a must-see.
Col du Parpaillon – A Journey Through History
Finally, there’s the Col du Parpaillon, a high-altitude route with a unique twist. At the summit, you’ll find an old military tunnel that’s still open to drive through in summer.
The atmosphere inside is damp, dark, and echoing; it’s like stepping back in
time.
Every time I drive it, I feel both the thrill of adventure and the weight of history.
It’s one of those rare routes where the journey is just as powerful as the destination.
