Overlanding Adventures Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and the Adriatic Coast 2026

Overlanding Adventures Austria, Slovenia, Croatia and the Adriatic Coast. My name is Darren, and my Overlanding Business is called 4×4 Gravel Tours. Or to keep it simple, we call it 4×4 GT. Now I get asked quite a lot about the Overlanding tours I have done over my 15 Years of Overlanding.

One Overlanding Tour that sticks in my mind was travelling from Austria into Slovenia, then into Croatia and down to the Adriatic Coast.overlanding slovenia

Starting the Journey in Austria 2026

Firstly, the adventure started in Calais, but after a long drive, I rolled into Austria. Sat in my Land Rover. Looking at the mountains around me as they rose high above.

This Overlanding Adventure driving through Austria always feels relaxing, however, the sharp peaks still demand respect. The roads carried me higher, and the scenery became even more dramatic. If you have seen the film the Italian Job. the first one in1969 not the re-make you get the idea. The opening scene, this first 3 minutes. The Lamborghini Miura P400 driving up the Great St. Bernard Pass. Well not quite, but there was a Land Rover in the film.

As I left the main roads and headed into the Gravel Tracks this tour had begun and I was entering into simply the unknown. Sounds a bit dramatic.. But hey..
Passing the alpine villages added warmth to each stop, and the mountain tracks kept the drive interesting. But soon the villages are gone and you are all alone

Crossing Into Slovenia

Soon after leaving Austria behind, I crossed into Slovenia, and almost immediately, the landscape shifted again. Slovenia welcomed me with rolling hills and deep forests, and the contrast was immediate — softer light, quieter roads, and a completely different rhythm to the drive. Because the tracks were quieter than Austria, I found more time to explore, pausing wherever the scenery demanded a second look. As a result, the routes here suit a calm pace, and they felt ideal for relaxed 4×4 overlanding travel, especially for anyone looking to slow down and truly take in the countryside.

Eventually, Lake Bled appeared like a postcard scene, its still water and hillside church instantly living up to the hype. And although the area felt busy with fellow travellers, the surrounding trails gave me chances to escape the crowds and find a bit of solitude just minutes away. Furthermore, the evening light across the water gave the whole place a peaceful glow, turning what could have been just another scenic stop into one of the most memorable moments of the trip so far.

All things considered, Slovenia surprised me more than I expected, and the journey pushed me forward with renewed excitement for whatever came next. By the time night fell, setting up camp as the darkness

Into the Croatian Wilderness 2026

After Slovenia, Croatia opened its rugged side. The inland regions showed rocky trails, long open plains, and quiet forests. As the miles passed, I felt the Land Rover a steady rhythm. The knocks and bangs kid of make music to my ears.

Croatia always offers wildness, and that is why I feel so many travellers choose it for the real Overlanding Adventures.

Even so, the road remained smooth in places, allowing faster progress toward the coast. The Croatian National Park delivered dramatic views, and the hidden campsites created another perfect overnight halt. I found Croatia’s mix of challenge and comfort made it a highlight of this Overlanding Adventure.

Reaching the Adriatic Coast

When the coastline finally appeared, it felt like a reward. The deep blue Adriatic looked unreal after the forests and mountains. The coast delivered warm air, long winding tracks, and views that stretched endlessly. Because the road ran close to the sea, the journey felt calmer than the inland routes. I was back in a movie, the salt hair and the smell of the sea.

The Adriatic Coast truly suits long Overland Tours, as you can travel slowly and enjoy every small village along the way. Many travellers consider this region perfect for beginners, but it still keeps experienced drivers happy.

Nights on the Adriatic

As the days moved on, the nights by the water became unforgettable. The sky turned dark blue, and the stars reflected across the sea. Because the coastline remained quiet at night. These peaceful moments are why I love 4×4 Overlanding, and why I plan trips like this.

Cooking by the Land Rover is always simple, and the calm breeze made each evening better. I spent hours talking to locals, listening to their stories, and learning more about coastal life. This mix of warmth and adventure made the Adriatic shine. And if you do join us you will see, I do talk to everyone.

Returning Through the Mountains

Eventually, I had to return back towards the UK. The route turned inland again. The mountains rose slowly as I travelled back toward Austria. However, the return journey gave fresh views, and the roads felt new again. The cooler air helped me stay focused as the climbs became steeper.

As I drove, I thought about how every country added something different. Austria brought dramatic mountains. Slovenia offered calm forests. Croatia delivered rugged tracks. The Adriatic Coast gave unforgettable sunsets. Because of this, the entire trip felt balanced and complete.

The Heart of Overlanding

Trips like this remind me why I keep planning more Overlanding Adventures. Quite simply thats why I wanted to start 4×4 Gravel Tours. The mix of nature, driving, and freedom creates something powerful. Although the miles sometimes feel long, the rewards are huge. Friends often ask why I choose routes like these, and the answer is simple. They make life feel bigger.

If you love Overland Tours, you understand the importance of slow travel and steady progress. You also understand how a single landscape can change your mood. That is what makes these journeys special.

This Overlanding Adventure reminded me that simple routes can still deliver huge rewards. As always, I cannot wait to head out again with you.
I hope my journey inspires you to call me or message me and bring your 4×4 Overlander along
